Many people love to collect old signs. Sings from shops signs from gas stations andsigns from restaurants all make great wall décor. Hang them right on the walls for an interesting display. Make sure you know how to hang them properly so they look their best.
You have just purchased a vintage baker sign that will be a focal point of your theme in the kitchen. So now you have it at home and you hammer a nail into the wall beside the hutch and slip your vintage baker sign over it. Nothing could be easier!
You take a step back to admire your new purchase. You look at the wall from different angles. You squint at the antique sign. Something doesn’t look right.
There are a few common errors that are made while hanging and arranging items on a wall. These errors look awkward to the eye, but you cannot put a finger on exactly what is wrong or how to fix it. Use the guidelines below when arranging wall décor on a wall:
Hanging Large Signs:
The larger signs can be your focal point. Be sure to hang it in the right spot. Where do larger pieces look the best? Try over a couch, behind the dining set, over a fireplace or on a feature wall. A feature wall is where the placement of furniture or the layout of the home naturally guides the eye to a wall - a great place to feature signs.
Hanging Small Signs:
Try to group small pieces if possible. Using similar or matching frames and matting make this look more pleasing. If you don’t have a group, a smaller piece should be hung low and close to the furniture.
Hanging Signs In Groups:
Make a statement by grouping your collection together on one wall. To get them to look right, you must space them properly. Each item should be spaced about 3 inches away from the items on either side. Lay the pieces out on the floor first so that you can find the perfect arrangement. Then measure carefully and make your holes for hanging.
HEIGHT:
Signs looks best when hung with the center point at eye level. That means the center should be about 60 to 66 inches from the floor. If you've visited a gallery you will see that the frames are not lined up by their top or bottom edges but that the pictures are all centered at the same height.
If your sign would be viewed from a sitting position, then hang it at the sitter’s eye level.
If you are hanging it behind the couch, make sure it is no more than 10” above the back.
These easy tips will have you creating a designer look in every room in your house!
