The Single Bed

There are many types of beds available in the market these days. Some of these are Single bed, Double bed, Full bed, Queen bed, King bed, California King, Western King, and Eastern king bed etc. Many times a single bed is confused to be the same as the twin bed but there is a slight difference between the two. A simple definition of a single bed would be ‘a bed that is meant for or used by a single occupant’. Although the twin bed is also necessarily used by a single occupant there is a difference between the two.

Difference between the twin bed and the single bed

A twin bed is one part of the two identical beds of same size, shape and dimensions. It is meant for one occupant. Although the single bed is also meant for one occupant too, there is a difference between the two in terms of size, shape etc. If two single beds of different dimensions and patterns are kept in a room they will not be called twin beds. Thus basically two single beds of same size, dimension and shape make a twin bed.

Uses for a single bed

The single bed can be used in the following places – Living room instead of a sofa Guest rooms Single occupancy hotel rooms College dormitories Small flats or studio apartments Thus these have a widespread usage in spaces that are especially small. The single bed can also be used by permanent bachelors.

Advantages and disadvantages of the single bed

Advantages – The single bed has advantages in smaller spaces because they are narrow and occupy less space. They can be used as sofa cum beds and also used to accommodate a single guest. The single beds are less expensive and so are the sheets, which also come in different patterns in case of single beds.
Disadvantages - The single bed can become uncomfortable sometimes for some adults and teens that are tall and hefty.

Dimensions of the single bed

The dimensions of the single bed are similar to that of the twin bed. The standard dimension is 39" wide x 75" long, although this can be varied to suit the convenience of the user. But it is advisable not to take a smaller dimension than this as it can cause utmost discomfort.

Cost and varieties and variations of the single bed

A good single bed is likely to cost anywhere between 200 to 1000 dollars. There are various types of single beds which differ in materials, patterns and shapes. The materials that are commonly used are different varieties of wood, metal and pine. The beds can either be polished or painted in different colors and they can have different floral or striped patterns. These days there are many add-on’s to the single bed like headboards, battery back-ups, motorized bed lifters, cot sides, trundles etc too!
