Ideas for Decorating a Victorian Style Bedroom
The Victorian era was one of fancy ornate furniture and opulent accessories but there are many variations you can use in order to decorate and Victorian style bedroom. Below are some suggestions as to things you might want to use in your bedroom to get that great Victorian look.
1. Bed
there a couple of choices for the touring style beds, you could go with a brass bed, or swirly cast-iron bed or one of the heavy wooden beds that were so common during that time. These beds were often in dark wood with some sort of veneer inlay and many times had intricate carvings. Some were very tall - too tall to fit in some of today’s homes! You can look around in antique stores to get authentic beds from the time, but I will have to warn you that the largest size you might find is a full-size. If you want a Queen or King size, you may have to go to a modern furniture store and buy a reproduction.
2. Bedding
Elaborate canopies, lacy pillows and velvet duvets or comforters go great with the Victorian lock.
3. Tables
Most Victorian bedrooms had a marble topped table and perhaps even matching marble top bureaus. If you’re going for a lighter look you can try weaker or bamboo tables. A skirted dressing table using a vintage style fabric adds authenticity and character. Try shopping at yard sales and flea markets for wide choice of interesting antique tables.
4. Lighting
Lighting can be made from Crystal, brass or porcelain and there are many choices that can go well in a Victorian-style bedroom. floor lamps with fancy fringed fabric shades can really add a unique vintage look to your bedroom. Use crochet doilies under the lamps just like they did back in the day.
5. Dressers & Chest of Drawers
Dark wood such as mahogany is best for bureaus and dressers and the Victorians would have them with marble tops and embellished with pediments and fancy carvings. The drawer pulls would also be ornate. It’s getting harder and harder to find matching sets from this error so you may have to go with reproductions.
6. Flooring
What goes better with the Victorian look than an Oriental Rug? If you don’t like the look of an Oriental you could try hooked rugs or even something just one solid color.
7. Accessories
include vintage Victorian accessories in your room and you’lll not only get interesting and unique items, but they may also go up in value as time goes on. You can include period Pictures such as oil paintings, or prints were even hand done embroidery. Elaborately framed mirrors look great as do vintage vases filled with flowers. Take a trip to any antique store, flea market, or even a yard sale and find interesting knickknacks from days gone by to decorate your bedroom with.
8. Windows
Depending on the Victorian style you’re going for, you might want to put thick velvet drapes in the Windows or frilly light curtains accented with the balances that have fringe or lace. Tie backs with tassels will look great and allow you to hold the drapes back.
Decorating and Victorian bedroom can really be fun especially if you take your time picking out the antique items to go in the room. It might take a bit longer, but you’ll have in unique mix of things that will add value to your bedroom.
