Bedroom Window Treatments

Selecting bedroom window treatments is an important part of the design process and requires more than just a trip to the discount store to see what’s on sale.
You need to match the style of your window treatment to the overall style of the bedroom as well as get a good color match in the fabric.

What window treatment is best for your bedroom? There’s 3 ways you can dress up your windows, and these can be used in combination with each other. Here’s some tips on which style you might choose depending on the design of your bedroom.

Curtains and Drapes

Your basic curtain window treatment isn’t so basic anymore! There’s many styles to choose from. For a simple bedroom design, it’s always safe to go with a plain sheer curtain these will go well with a modern design, a romantic design a beach style design –really almost any design! They soften the window without standing out too much so if you want to focus on the other elements than this might be a good choice of window treatment.

Valances can help soften the top of a window and enhance your bedroom design. Since they only cover the top portion, this window treatment doesn’t offer much privacy, so you might want to add some panels on the side that you can pull across to block the view or some blinds that you can close at night for privacy.

Drapes can add elegance to your bedroom windows. If you have a romantic, French or Italian theme some heavy drapes in lush fabrics will make your bedroom look like it belongs in a palace. Drapes like this will look best on tall windows or French doors, but if you have those short squatty windows you can keep the drapes closed and who will know the difference?

Some bedding ensembles come with matching curtains and this can be a great way to pull a room together. If you are using the tie back curtains or valances, you may want to use blinds as an additional window treatment for added privacy.

Wooden Shutters and Blinds

You can use indoor wooden window blinds alone or in conjunction with other window treatments to add privacy to your bedroom. Theses blinds are typically wood, but they do make some nice faux wood (vinyl) shutters that look great and require little to no work.

There's basically 2 types of shutters you might use as an indoor window treatment for the bedroom – plantation shutters and café shutters. The plantation shutters have louvers and cover the entire window – the louvers can be opened or closed to let light in or provide privacy as needed. These types of shutters look great in a beach style or country style bedroom.

The café style shutters cover the bottom half of your window and are also louvered, but you typically swing them open and shut to provide light or privacy. These also look good in a country or beach style bedroom and can be used in combination with other window treatments such as curtains or valances to soften up the window.

Fabric Blinds

Fabric blinds can be a simple or an ornate window treatment. A plain panel roller shade can be decorated with fringe and add whimsy to a kids room or be covered in sleek fabric and provide privacy in a contemporary style bedroom. Use it in conjunction with fabric panels for a softer look.

Roman blinds are great window treatments for kids rooms, beach or cottage style or any bedroom where you want to let a lot of light in. They fold up to expose the whole window in the day and then slide down for privacy at night. If you want to soften the window up, you can use them with a valance or leave them plain for a clean look.

Festoon blinds are romantic and ornate. If you have a Victorian, French, Italian or any other type of old world or romantic bedroom design, using this type of window treatment in a rich velvet fabric with ornate trims will make your bedroom fit for a palace. It’s probably better for larger rooms with wide windows but in the right bedroom theme it can look fabulous.
