Fabric Blinds
Fabric blinds can be a great way to show off your beautiful window trim and dress up the window at the same time.
There are several styles of fabric window blinds from a plain roller shade to a very ornate Austrian or festoon blind. If you plan on using blinds instead of curtains, you’ll be able to find a style that goes with any type of bedroom design.
Roller Blinds
Remember those ugly old plasticy blinds on a spring roller that your grandmother used to have? Well today’s fabric roller blinds are anything but ugly! Even the plainest blind can be dressed up by adding stenciling and applying funky trims to the bottom. You can stiffen up any fabric to make roller blinds that will match any bedroom theme. You can also use these blinds in conjunction with other window treatments so they go with any style. A roller blind made out of a rice paper type fabric plain can go great in an oriental style bedroom while a blind with elegant fabric and ornate trim along with matching drapes and trim can complete an ornate romantic bedroom. Roman Blinds
Roman blinds are great if you want a simple window treatment that lets in a lot of light. They are basically panels of fabric that roll up to the very top of the window. When let down, the blinds form a panel that covers the entire window for total privacy. These can be made from any fabric and could go with almost any style, but are best for the minimalist type of designs. A simple beach or cottage style would look nice with roman blinds as would an oriental or zen style. Picking the right fabric to use is key with these. You can make your own roman blinds and match your fabric to your bedding or other items in the room.
Festoon Blinds
Festoon or Austrian blinds are the most ornate of the blinds. They hang in the window across to the edges of the casement with a scalloped edge at the bottom, when drawn up, the edging becomes more ballooned as the fabric is gathered up. These can be whimsical if you pick a light cotton fabric, but look great in a heavy elegant fabric for a romantic or old world bedroom. These blinds can add a lot of drama to a beautiful window.
When choosing fabric for window blinds, pick a fabric that goes with your bedroom style. If your style is ornate, then a heavy fabric like velvet in a rich color might look best. If your style is contemporary, then your blinds should be in either a funky pattern or have a plain minimalist look. If you are making your blinds, remember that fabric that has a pattern to it, will be harder to work with than a plain fabric and don’t forget that you can dress up even a plain roller shade with trim and accessories!
