Vintage Bedroom Designs

Vintage bedroom designs can be achieved using vintage accents, new accents, or a combination of both!
There are a couple of popular vintage styles for bedrooms today and the two could not be more different! One features the frilly linens, flowers and shabby accessories of Victorian times while the other likes the sleek lines of the mid century modern designs.

Shopping for accessories to complete your vintage bedroom designs can be fun. If you want some real collectibles, shop the flea markets, yard sales, antique stores and consignment stores. Buy what you like and can afford but don't worry too much about value unless you are set on collecting really expensive items. One tip is to have a list of what you need before you go shopping and stick to the list. It is very easy to get caught up in buying and then when you get home you find out you have a lot of neat stuff but no where to put it which can result in lots of unsightly clutter!

Victorian

Victorian vintage bedroom designs focus on ornate furniture, flowery walls and curtains and shabby chic accents. A floral wallpaper is good for this type of room, but if you don't want to spend the money on it, you can always paint and put up a nice border. I suggest a white or off white paint and let the wall art and accents take center stage. The bedding can be frilly with lots of eyelet lace and floral or even quilted design bed spreads. Stack up lots of pillows in complimentary colors and patterns.

If you can afford the Victorian furniture go for it! Most times you can buy vintage furniture for not much more than the new stuff and it is made a lot better and will last for ever! Vintage wall art can add a lot of interest, but reproductions of vintage art can be just as nice, cost less, and be easier to find in the colors and sizes you need.

Victorian vintage bedroom designs like to have lots of accents - fancy picture frames on tables, crystal vases filled with flowers, needlepoint chairs, pillows and stools. Fill the room up but don't overcrowd. Add some lace doilies or lacey pieces of cloth that hang over the edge of the tables (you can even layer shorter doilies over longer tablecloths and let them drip over the edges).

Mid Century

Although you might think a 1950's or 60's vintage bedroom design would be stuffy and old fashioned they are actually surprisingly modern. During the mid century era, many modern design styles were created that are still used today! If you can buy vintage pieces from this era, you should as they will only be going up in value, but I must warn you that pieces from these mid century designers are quite pricey today.

This vintage bedroom design features sleek lines, with a white background and punches of color. When I think mid century, molded plastic comes to mind as this is when those tulip chairs, egg chairs and other furniture using molded plastic became popular. Sleek platform beds and minimalist furniture is the key here. If you are on a budget, buy some used furniture that has clean lines and paint it with a shiny paint in a punchy color like orange or turquoise.

Walls should be painted and can be white if you want the accents to add the color, or if you have a large room you can go with red or black to add interest. Rugs can have a geometric pattern or use flokati accent rugs. The window treatments should be minimalist - maybe just some nice shades. Bedding should have clean lines - nothing frilly. Use neutral colored bedding with bright accent pillows.

When selecting accents for this vintage bedroom design, select anything that has sleek lines and bright colors. Nothing fancy, typically these accents should be just color but with an interesting shape. Geometric shapes are best, especially the amoeba shape. If you want to have vases, use sparse flower arrangements such as a couple of small cylinder vases with 1 flower each or a minimalist flower display in a larger vase. Oriental type accents such as floating lotus flowers go well with this look too.
