Water Based Paint
Water based paint, or latex paint has a water base in which the pigments and binder are suspended.
When applied, the water evaporates and leaving the pigment and binder on the surface as a permanent color. It is the most common type of paint used for walls and other indoor applications.
Vinyl latex paint can be mixed into any color imaginable and can be applied with a flat or satin finish. When painting wood, water based acrylic paints may be used and these typically have a satin finish. Unlike oil based paints, those with a water base do not need a primer as a base coat. Non drip latex paint is a bit thicker which helps prevent runs and makes for a thicker coat. Solid latex paint is even thicker and typically used for ceilings. Water based paints can be applied with a brush, roller or paint pad.
Some of the characteristics of water or latex based paints include:
Durability - Extremely durable and color is resistant to fading. Adheres to most surfaces with the possible exception of chalky substances. Paints with a water base should not be used to paint over areas previously painted with solvent based paints. Mildew resistant.
Ease of Use - Goes on smooth with little brush lines. No drip versions of this paint are formulated to prevent drips for a smoother finish. Has virtually no smell. Dries in about 6 hours.
Cleanup - Brushes, rollers and other materials cleanup with water.
Paint that has a water base can be used for many kinds of decorative applications. Stenciling and faux painting are popular ways to decorate but there are also latex paints and glazes that can be used to create different looks such as stippling, rag rolling or dragging.
If applying to fresh masonry or galvanized iron, you must apply a primer.
